How do you measure berry season?

SistersYou can measure berry season pretty accurately by remembering that it lasts the month of June.  June is winding down, and so is berry season!

There are plenty of blueberries right now, but the season is just about over.  Get blueberries and blackberries while you can. Fresh is best, but berries freeze well.

Blueberries are plentiful, come early if you want blackberries. The only days we will be open (for sure) are Tuesday the 26th and Thursday the 28th of June.  Hours are still 7-11 AM and 5-9 PM. Rain or shine.

Mixed Berry Cobbler Recipe

2018Great week, great recipe

It was a huge week for berry lovers, the picking was good.  We had a little rain, and the more adventurous pickers got rain-washed berries.  Fresh, or anticipating a fabulous dessert, berries just make you smile. Whether the plan is to make a pie, ice cream, smoothie, granita, cobbler, popsicles, cake, or something else, you know its going to be wonderful. Plus, you have the satisfaction of actually picking the fruit yourself. How great are these smiles!

BerriesThe season is pretty short. The month of June is a good rule of thumb for remembering when they are ripe.  Sometimes it can reach to the 4th of July, but not every year, so there may be only two weeks left, including this one.  Rain or shine, pick them while you can!  Luckily berries freeze really well.

Hours and dates in the near future are:
Tuesday June 19th, Thursday the 21st, Sunday the 24th and Thursday the 28th
7-11AM and 5-9PM on each of those days.  We’ll see how it looks on the 28th and will post if there are berries to be picked on July 1st.

Below is a slideshow of some, not all, of the great people who came out this past week.  We had the Active Life group on the 12th, and then Father’s Day proved popular with lots of Dads and their families.  Some came early to pick specifically for a super “Dad” dessert and cobbler seemed to be the number one request.  Undeniably, it is “cooking with love” if you take the time to pick the berries yourself. There are numerous ways to make a cobbler, and all are delicious.  Here is a cobbler recipe that I use that is the same whether I use blackberries, blueberries or a combination.  It has always turned out great. (I double it and it fits nicely in a regular long pyrex baking dish.)

More Berry Picking

Early Pickers 2018There are more berries this week.

We will be open for more berry picking Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday:

Tuesday – June 5, Thursday – June 7th, and Sunday – June 10th.  Hours are mornings: 7AM-11AM and evenings: 5PM-9PM.

We are hoping to keep this same schedule throughout the month of June, but it all depends on the berries.  We will keep you updated. Next week, a large group is scheduled on June 12th as the Active Life Group will come for their annual berry picking outing.

What kind of berries?

Blueberries and Blackberries.  The blackberries are a little slower to ripen, and are not yet in full swing, but that will happen any day now.  Blueberries are abundant and totally in season.  We have several more rows of blueberries than blackberries, so if you are specifically seeking blackberries, come early in the day.

What to bring?

We supply a bucket with a liner to pick into.  Then we lift the fruit out with the liner and you can conveniently carry your berries home.  There are three sizes to choose from: a generous pint, a quart, and a two and a half quart pail. Prices are $4, $7, and $15.  You may want to bring a hat, though, and a few helpers.

Slideshow

There were lots of terrific proactive berry pickers here for the first pick days, and there were more folks than we got photos.  Here is a slideshow of some (not all) of the folks who got the first pick of the season.
