Blackberry Season’s Big Finish

coupleBySignWe have two full rows of Navaho Blackberries which are still producing and giving us our big finish, but this is the last week we will be open.  If you want blackberries, you should come early in the morning on Tuesday July 7th or on Friday July 10th.  Hours are being reduced to mornings only this week.  Time is limited and you’ve also got wildlife to compete with (see below).

There are so many interesting blackberry enthusiasts that have visited us this season.  This past week has been no different.  This happy couple came from Columbus and if you want to see what 2 and a half quarts of berries looks like, that is what they are holding.  We supply a bucket with a liner and you simply lift out the liner and carry your berries home in it, with a twist tie, of course.  We also have a 1 quart size bucket with liner and a 1 pint size.  Remember, July 7th and July 10th are the end of our open berry season, so get them while you can.  See sidebar for more details.

Multiple factors cheap levitra uk contribute in forming this health disorder by evaluating the actual cause of problem. If you are young and you notice that you have faster heart beats, tadalafil tablets india you are sweating or you have a blur vision. Doctors usually conduct a morning blood test to levitra price determine the cause of impotence along with a blood test and various physical and psychological factors you must know. Deer in BlackberriesWe have had an increase in wildlife that are enjoying our berries.  At first there were a few birds, and then a few squirrels that would scamper away when they saw us.  That is to be expected.  But, now the numbers have increased and additionally we have seen deer on numerous occasions.  They don’t just eat berries, they meander along the row, look for the big juicy ones just like we would, and they pick them so gently.  They must be enjoying them as their ears wiggle each time they pick one.

What happens now?

As each row finishes bearing, the “floricanes”, which are the stems that are producing fruit this year, begin to wither and droop.  These stems do not produce again next year and they need to be pruned out.  It’s easiest to do this right after the fruiting season because you can easily tell them apart from the new growth.  This process lets the plants energy go into the “primocanes”, which are the stems that will produce next years berries.  Since we have different varieties of berries, they have slightly different timelines in which they bloom, bear fruit, and wither so that lets the work of pruning be spaced out too.  Even though the blackberries have a big finish, more work is just beginning.  Here is a small video of Doug explaining the thornless blackberry pruning process.

Pick & PLAY Fun!

Pick&PLAYBlackberry SmileWow!  Friday’s Pick & PLAY was so much fun! The music was great, the blackberries were plentiful and beautiful smiles were everywhere.  Pictures are worth a thousand words, so here are several photos and a video too!  Great smiles are contagious especially when you have a bucketful of blackberries just waiting to be eaten.  The berries are easy for anyone to pick, tall or small… this handsome blackberry picker had no trouble finding some samples.  The weather was warm, but no one seemed to mind.  CaseWe are so grateful that it didn’t rain.  Zach and Renee Patten were our featured musicians.  They really set the mood with the music that they chose and the quality with which they play.  The music just floated over the entire berry patch.  The terraces have a natural amphitheater effect.  We had a surprise guest artist, who played the flute named Emily Jarrell.  She was terrific!  Not only did she play solo, but she also joined in with Zach and Renee on a few songs.  She enjoyed her free cup of berries.  Renee played a special instrument on Friday, it was her Grandmother’s violin.  She thoughtfully keeps a photo of her Grandmother with the violin in the case as a remembrance.

Our farm has had some wonderfully written press lately with great pictures too.  Both the LaGrange Daily News and The Valley Times News have excellent reporters.  Here is a link to  the LaGrange Daily News article titled “Farmer Has Big Plans”   The Valley Times News also has a direct link to their article entitled, “Pick Your Own Fresh Berries Offered at RabbitEye Farm.” The Valley Times News reprinted the directions the following day, so just use the directions and map that we provide on the website HERE.

Blackberry SmileThis warm weather is plumping up the berries nicely.  The Blackberries are ripe when they practically fall off the vine into your hand.  It’s a funny thought that Blackberries are still “green” when they are red.  Even though they look good red, they have to be entirely black if you want to eat them plain.  Some have said that they purposely pick some red ones if they are making jelly as the red Blackberries help it to jell.  Apparently, that is how they used to make jelly back before you could buy pectin.  I didn’t know that.

At RabbitEye Farm, the Blackberries are still the most abundant, then Red Raspberries, which we are still surprised about.  The Blueberries haven’t grown up quite enough yet this year.  There is still one more variety to ripen called “Ochlockonee”, but that hasn’t happened yet. I’ll let you know.

The next big thing for us is our Pick & PLAY music event this Friday June, 19th and again on June 26th, 2015.  Live music in the berry patch!  Listen while you pick berries or just sit and listen or bring an instrument and join in.  4PM – 7 PM.  We can’t control the weather, but if it rains, come on out anyway, there will be berries to pick.  Maybe you can get blackberry juice on your chin too.

Happy Berry Picking

Happy CcustomersBerry picking was good Tuesday morning in beautiful weather.  A quick rain shower happened in the early afternoon, and then we had another beautiful evening.  We enjoyed meeting lots of great people, most of whom just happened to hear about us by accident.  Here are a few pictures from our very first pick day… ever!  The blackberries were plentiful and everyone got what they came for, huge juicy berries.  A few also found enough red raspberries to pick, which really surprised us!  This was a great start to the berry picking season, and these folks could see the loads more berries just waiting to mature.  We are going to be overrun with Blackberry goodness.  Yesterday I saw that the Blueberries were also ripening up.  Three types of berries are all ripening at the same time, Blackberries, Raspberries and Blueberries.  The Blackberries are the most abundant, then Blueberries, and then Raspberries.  We will probably expand our hours next week and will post them here on the website after Friday’s event.

Thumbs upPick & PLAY event

Each Friday in June from 4 – 7 PM, we will have live acoustic music in the berry patch.  How cool is that?  You can pick berries and enjoy beautiful music at the same time.  Live music outdoors is a special experience and so is picking the freshest berries you can get… right off the vine.  It’s a great relaxing summer experience.  We hope to see you and want you to feel like it deserves a thumbs-up like this beautiful berry picker!

We’ve made it easy…

We provide 3 sizes of buckets to pick into that have a liner.  You keep this liner to take your berries home.  It’s best to handle the berries as little as possible and this lets you transport your berries in the most gentle fashion. The sizes are: a generous pint, quart, and 2½ quart pails.  Prices are $3.75,  $7.00,  and $15.00.  We will also have berries “by the cup” for donations.  These proceeds all go toward the start up of Grayhill School Farm, a research and education farm dedicated to sustainable agriculture in our local area.  More about this soon.
Open Friday June 12th from 7 – 11 AM and then again from 4 – 7 PM with our Pick and PLAY music event.
