Big beautiful smiles were everywhere Sunday at RabbitEye Farm for Opening Day. It was cool in the morning, rained a little in the afternoon, got really humid for a while and then cooled back off later in the day. 
Many folks were avid pickers and got some nice amounts. By the end of the day, the rows were pretty well gleaned of the ripe berries. As you can see from this first picture, there are a lot more berries ripening for Thursday’s pick. The ripening process will continue all month, so there will be plenty for everyone. It is best to come early in the day though.
We are happy to see that the blueberries have improved this year. If you recall, the blackberries outperformed the blueberries by a large margin last year. But the blueberries are catching up and are producing quite a few berries. Hopefully the crows won’t pick them before you have a chance. We’ve had to make two scarecrows and also have had to keep moving them around. The crows here are smart and rather bold. The dogs aren’t a help at all with keeping the birds out, so the idea of making another scarecrow that looks like a dog was quickly overruled.

We use no pesticides and grow our berries with only sustainable organic practices. We eat them right off the vine and we encourage you to taste the subtle differences between the varieties. Let us know which berry and which variety you like the best. Our blackberries have no thorns and little ones as well as adults can reach both the blackberries and the blueberries easily. We hope you come out this berry season and taste the summertime in our blackberries and blueberries!
We are so grateful that it didn’t rain. Zach and Renee Patten were our featured musicians. They really set the mood with the music that they chose and the quality with which they play. The music just floated over the entire berry patch. The terraces have a natural amphitheater effect. We had a surprise guest artist, who played the flute named Emily Jarrell. She was terrific! Not only did she play solo, but she also joined in with Zach and Renee on a few songs. She enjoyed her free cup of berries. Renee played a special instrument on Friday, it was her Grandmother’s violin. She thoughtfully keeps a photo of her Grandmother with the violin in the case as a remembrance.
We also have a new sign. Here is a quick photo. It looked a lot bigger while it was in our living room, just like a Christmas tree looks smaller when its outside. To keep the cost minimal, we worked really hard and the whole family pitched in to make it. We installed it with some volunteer help digging the 3½ foot hole. What a project! So, now you will know you are in the right place when you see it. We have some wildflowers planted near it, but they aren’t quite ready to bloom.
